The Mile Mural Concept

The proposed mural transforms The Mile’s exterior into a welcoming visual landmark rooted in the history and identity of Runnemede. A powerful black horse gallops across fields of grain beneath the words “Black Horse Pike — surveyed in 1774.” The image connects the building directly to the historic roadway on which it stands, while the surrounding farmland recalls the landscape that existed before the Pike developed into the commercial corridor we know today.

Across the adjoining walls, the roadway winds through the landscape alongside the familiar blessing, “May the road rise up to meet you.” Together with the large “Welcome!” message, the mural expresses hospitality, movement and arrival—ideas that are especially appropriate for a neighborhood pub and gathering place.

The location gives the project unusual public value. The Mile stands prominently on the Black Horse Pike at the traffic light at Third Avenue, where motorists, pedestrians and nearby residents have time to take in the artwork. Rather than being seen only in passing, the mural would become a highly visible gateway feature and a memorable point of reference along one of Runnemede’s principal roads.

For The Mile, the mural would give the business a distinctive identity, strengthen its connection to the community and create an inviting exterior that people will remember, photograph and share. Its imagery promotes the establishment through character and placemaking rather than conventional advertising.

For Runnemede, the mural would beautify a prominent intersection, celebrate local history and demonstrate how public art can strengthen the appearance of the Black Horse Pike business district. It would turn an ordinary commercial building into a community landmark—welcoming people to The Mile while also welcoming them to Runnemede.
